The Great Gatsby |
The Great Gatsby is a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, an American Author, in 1925, casting various characters of their appearances in a fictional scenario. The story revolves around a mysterious millionaire, Jay Gatsby, who is young and charming, and who is passionate about beautiful Daisy Buchanan.
The character of the protagonist is dynamic who, unlike his father who comes from Minnesota, came from Midwest, North Dakota. As the title of the story depicts, Gatsby is great in many of his doings. He starts his life as a dreamer, though being charismatic and energetic. The story takes the reader from his early life to his adulthood where he does try to fulfil his idealistic dreams. Gatsby is a self-directed personality. He is mysterious and lives a life of his choice. The story fabricates the character of Gatsby from being a poor though charming fellow to a well-organized man who could do anything to win his love. He became an ideal personality that reflected American dream.
Gatsby started his life as the son of a poor farmer. During his early life, he had fewer life issues to deal with. As his life passes, he had an opportunity to reinvent himself. The journey transformed a poor Jimmy Gatz into a goal-oriented charming personality of Jay Gatsby. Such evolution adds a crispy ingredient to the story of his life. He happens to fall for a beautiful girl and wants to win her at any cost. However, like a real hero, Gatsby too faces certain obstructions in order to win his love. One of the big obstructions, which Gatsby always experienced, was money. The financial issue was the main threat to his love. Nonetheless, he wished to have it always in order to get his love. He focused on his goal and was quite admirable.
Gatsby does not always implement his positive traits to get his daily needs. He earns money through organized crime. He sells liquor illegally. He meant his business to be well equipped with money all the time. His character does not mingle easily with the people with whom he does business. Although, he became friends with Daisy’s cousin, Nick.
The character of Gatsby is wrapped in a romantic fabric that reflects his burning thirst for his love. Every single act of Gatsby would radiate a sincere, romantic gesture that kept his struggle alive. May it be selling liquor or organizing a criminal act or even getting money at any cost, all the gestures reflect one important aspect that is his consistent approach to fulfil his need. It might not be wrong to mention that everything he does he does for her. In other words, his actions, in whatever form, both his physical and mental states were revolving his dream – the dream of the Daisy.
The whole adorable legitimacy of the character depicts a childish impression. Gatsby lives with such an endearing illusion that makes him recapture his past, though living as an adult. This admirable gesture of fulfilling his dream, in the appearance of love and romance, makes Gatsby halt at a specific point where he could not let himself out of his fantasy. His sincere and concrete focus on his dream, and not recognizing the reality outside, further strengthens his ideological belief in the dream. His holding up on his dream ultimately leads to his death.
One important trait of the story is that the character of Gatsby is not in love with the real character Daisy but, with an idea of the Daisy. This idealistic approach and the dreamy nature of the character perpetuate much sympathy for the character and make him –The Great Gatsby.
